Release notes

Hellbox (formerly Font Proof) has been in development since 2022 and went public in early 2026. It has been improving fast ever since. Here is everything that has shipped, newest first.

New name, same app: Font Proof is now Hellbox.

    • Cancel stops the render. Cancel in the rendering overlay now stops within a page and leaves the previous proof on screen. The next edit or refresh picks up where it left off.
    • Exporting while the preview is rendering no longer freezes the app.
    • Moved markup updates the preview. Dragging or resizing an annotation in a markup section re-renders immediately.
    • Designspace masters in subfolders compile again when their kerning groups need renaming.
    • Font size field shows the stepped value when you use the arrow keys.
    • PDF exports are written atomically, so a failed write can't damage the previous file.

    • Glyphs 4 exports render correctly. Fonts exported from Glyphs 4 could show individual glyphs shifted off the baseline or into their neighbors. Glyphs 4.0.1 writes malformed hint data when CFF subroutinization is switched off, which Hellbox did for export speed. Hellbox now leaves that setting at its default on Glyphs 4; the bug is reported to the Glyphs team.

    • Print size zoom. View > Print Size (⌥⌘0), also in the zoom popover, shows the page at the size it will print, worked out for the display the window is on. Actual size (100%) stays one page point per screen point.
    • Welcome window opens on Recent when you have recent documents; templates are one click away.
    • Help > Report an Issue opens the new public issue tracker with your Hellbox and macOS versions already filled in. Support details live at hellbox.com/support.

    • Fixed: Hinting Preview skipped the Glyph Set's Every glyph view. Glyphs drawn by ID (including unencoded ones) now hint like everything else.
    • Fixed: UFO and designspace sources whose kerning groups use the older naming without the public.kern prefix lost all class kerning when compiled. Hellbox now normalizes those group names before compiling, without touching your files.
    • Fixed: the font size field clamped on every keystroke, so typing 12 could land on 4. It now applies live for valid values and clamps only when you commit.
    • Fixed: in Mix mode the page footer named every enabled font, including ones weighted to 0%. It now lists only the fonts that can land on the page.
    • "Zoom to 100%" is now "Actual size": one point on the page is one point on screen, the same 100% as Preview.

    • Fixed: variable font instances added through the instance picker all rendered the default instance in Glyph Set sections. Each row now draws at its own coordinates, and Hinting Preview hints at those coordinates too.
    • Fixed: an italic tag nested inside a weight role (<extralight><i>...</i></extralight>) rendered upright when the role was mapped to a font explicitly. It now resolves to that weight's italic.
    • Weight roles rank a family's faces by the weight stored in the font, so families with non-English style names (Extraleicht, Kräftig, Extrafett) resolve correctly.

    • Tag styles live on the font list. The separate Tag styles group is gone: hover any font row and a chevron pops the tag assignments for that font. "Use for Bold / Italic / Bold Italic" plus that tag's tracking, with the proof updating live behind the open popover. Works on the Section mix rows too.
    • Fixed: after Generate Text in a Columns & Rows section, an un-overridden cell's editor kept showing the previously typed text. It now previews the generated text, and overriding a cell starts from what you see.

    • Variable font instance picker. Adding a variable font with named instances now asks which ones to proof. Each pick lands as its own row pinned to its coordinates, and every row's Instance dropdown offers all the font's stops. Works from the Add Fonts panel, window drops, and the Dock icon.
    • Hinting Preview works on variable fonts. Hold-H previously fell back to smooth rendering on varied instances, hiding hinting mistakes visible in other apps. TT hinting now engages at the exact axis coordinates you set.
    • Per-tag tracking. Tag styles rows now carry their own tracking field, so a bold or italic span can get its own fit anywhere the tag applies.
    • Row breaks in the Glyph Grid. Typed line breaks become row breaks, and the row before a break stays flush-left. With-alternates mode matches the plain grid's gaps, metrics, and justification exactly.
    • Glyph names now resolve against the glyph's own font, so mixed-font sections label correctly.
    • Clicking a section in the sidebar always scrolls the proof to it.

    • Layer mode. A fourth option next to Page break, Line break, and Mix: every font in the section renders the same content stacked on one page at adjustable opacity, so you can compare versions or styles directly on top of each other. Differences read as darker areas.
    • Fixed: a live editor font showing as checked on the System Fonts tab when it shares a name with an installed font, and unchecking removing the wrong one.
    • Fixed: a system font could silently render as your in-progress version when a live export shares its PostScript name. Installed fonts now always resolve to the installed file.

    • FontLab live proofing. Fonts open in FontLab 8 now appear in Font Manager's Editors tab. Select one and the proof reloads on every save. Saved .vfj files compile natively, so glyphs built from element references render complete.
    • FontLab round trip. Cmd+click a glyph in the proof to open it in FontLab, or select text and press Return to send it to a new FontLab tab.
    • Glyphs round trip lands on the right master. Cmd+click from any proofed style now opens the glyph on that style's master (nearest by axis coordinates), instead of whichever master was last focused.

    • Feature labels come from the font. Stylistic sets and character variants now show the designer's own names in the features panel ("ss01 Alt R,a" instead of "Stylistic Set 01"), resolved the way the OpenType spec defines them. Fonts without names keep the generic labels.

    • Filter the grid by mark colors. The mark-color swatches from 1.40 now work in Glyph Grid: one click shows just the glyphs you've marked done, or only what's still unmarked, in Every glyph and source-set views.

Width comes from the wdth axis or the font's OS/2 width class, with style-name parsing as the fallback, so families still being drawn sort correctly too.     • Fixed: OpenType features missing from the features panel. Hellbox test-rendered each feature against a sample text and hid ones that didn't visibly change it, so features whose triggers fell outside the sample (a stylistic set that only affects punctuation, scientific inferiors, ordinals, localized forms) never showed up, especially on fonts still being drawn. The panel now offers every feature your font declares.

    • Fixed: hidden fonts reappearing on reload. Fonts you hid with the eye toggle came back every time the source changed (saving a UFO or designspace, editing an imported font, exporting from Glyphs). Hidden fonts now stay hidden through live reload.
    • Font-resolution checks now run on every build and gate each release, so the bold/italic/instance regressions from 1.37-1.41 can't ship again.

    • Cmd+click works with RoboFont closed: opening a glyph or sending a selection to Space Center from a UFO-sourced proof now launches RoboFont if it isn't running, opens the UFO, and lands you in the glyph window, the same way the Glyphs round trip already did. Remote scripting still needs to be on in RoboFont's preferences (Extensions &rarr; Shell).

    • Proof only what's marked done: Hellbox now reads mark colors from your UFO, designspace, or Glyphs file (RoboFont mark colors and Glyphs color labels) and shows them as swatches in the section controls. Pick one or more and generated text and "All drawn glyphs" narrow to glyphs carrying those marks; a "no mark" swatch proofs what you haven't flagged yet. Colors come from the source file, so nothing to configure, and the row only appears when the font actually uses marks.
    • The generator writes from whatever's in scope: caps only, accented letters only (é ñ ø ü become the words), figures only, or any mix, so a filter never leaves you a blank page when there are glyphs to proof. The coverage caption under the editor now says which alphabet the text was built from and whether gaps are undrawn glyphs or letters you filtered out.
    • Fixed: Tags only in Columns: a Columns section set to Mix + Tags only still auto-shuffled untagged words across the checked fonts. Inheriting cells now honor the section's choice.
    • Fixed: headless .glyphs instances: CI renders from a committed .glyphs drew every instance at the variable font's default. Each instance is now pinned to its own named-instance coordinates, so a Thin row is Thin and a Wide Black row is Wide Black.

    • CI just needs your .glyphs file: headless renders now compile committed .glyphs and .glyphspackage sources with the bundled fontc and resolve them next to the .fontproof, so a repo with the source and the proof document renders on any runner. No fontmake, no Python, no Glyphs install.
    • No more silent font substitution: when a document font can't be resolved headless, --render-check now reports it in a fontIssues list and fails, and --export warns, instead of quietly rendering a system font and calling the proof good.

    • Proof-to-RoboFont round trip: Cmd+click a glyph rendered from a .ufo or .designspace source to open its edit window in RoboFont. Select text and hit Return (or right-click) to land the selection in a Space Center, /glyphname runs intact. Uses RoboFont's remote scripting; Hellbox points you at the preference if it's off. Designspaces resolve to their master UFOs, preferring one already open.
    • Caps-only fonts generate words: fonts with no lowercase drawn yet (most works-in-progress start with caps) rendered an empty page in Drawn glyphs mode. They now generate real words from the uppercase coverage, set in caps.
    • Fixed: an unsaved RoboFont document no longer confuses open-font discovery, and proofs created through the MCP tools now start with Live Reload on, matching documents created in the app.

    • Fixed: underlines rendered inconsistently across point sizes (descender gaps at one size, solid at another). Hellbox now draws the underline itself from the font's own post-table metrics, the same way it draws strikethrough: a solid rule, proportional at every size, no descender skipping.
    • Fixed: the automatic <b> mapping picked the next heavier face, so a graded family (Regular, Book, Medium, Semibold, Bold) answered bold with Medium. It now resolves to the family's actual Bold, using instance axis values and OS/2 weights instead of style-name guessing. Nested bold still steps heavier from an already-bold base.

    • Weight roles read the STAT table: <extrabold> and the other role tags now also resolve through the font's STAT axis-value names, so fonts with sparse or missing named instances (common for work-in-progress variable fonts) still land on the designer's own ExtraBold. Resolution order: named instance, then STAT, then weight-name matching. Italic role spans pick up a separately named STAT Italic value too.

    • Fixed: zero-width glyphs (symbol components, isolated marks) stacked on top of their neighbors in Glyph Set sections. Their cells are now sized from the glyph's actual ink, so negative sidebearings and zero advances get room of their own. Grids of normal glyphs are unchanged.

    • Axis spans: on a variable font, wrap a run in <wght@900> or <wght@900,wdth@60> to re-render it at those coordinates, stacking on the font's own axis settings. Nests like every other tag; the @ marks axis locations, = stays reserved for feature values.
    • Weight roles honor your font: <extrabold> and friends now resolve to the font's own fvar named instance first, wherever the designer put it, before falling back to weight-name matching. On a variable font added as a single face, role tags used to do nothing; now they render the declared instance.
    • Future-proof tags: tag-shaped tokens Hellbox doesn't recognize are now consumed silently instead of rendering literally, so text using future tags degrades to clean plain text. Proofing code samples? Turn Style Tags off for that section, and everything renders exactly as typed. Details on the style tags page.

    • Hide sections: hover a section in the sidebar and click the eye (or right-click, Hide Section) to keep it, settings and all, while it contributes no pages to the proof or export. Hidden sections sit dimmed in the list with a slashed eye; click it to bring them back.
    • Line height basis: a new option in the advanced typography settings decides what line-height 1.0 means. Type size is the classic set-solid behavior and stays the default; Font metrics uses your font's ascent + descent + line gap, which gives vocalized Arabic and other mark-heavy scripts room to breathe instead of packing marks into the row above.
    • Agents can set the new line height basis over MCP too.

    • Underline and strikethrough: wrap a span in <u> or the new <s> tag (select text and press Cmd+E for the tag picker), or flip the new Underline / Strikethrough checkboxes in the advanced typography settings to rule the whole section. Rules draw from YOUR font's metrics: underline from the post table, strikethrough from the OS/2 values, solid with no descender skipping, so collisions and unset values show instead of hiding.

    • Letter-in-position words: the Drawn Glyphs generator can now filter to words featuring one letter where you want it. Click the filter icon next to the dice, type R for capitalized matches or r for lowercase, and pick Starts, Middle, Ends, or Any. A deep word list backs rare letters, and when real words run out, invented ones top up the page so the proof is never empty. Everything still passes the drawn-coverage gate.
    • Polish: style-tag markup typed into a Glyph Set section no longer renders as literal cells; the tags are consumed like everywhere else, and the Tag Styles pickers hide where they don't apply.
    • Fixed: a background-thread race in welcome-screen thumbnail rendering.

    • Glyph sets from your source: Glyph Grid sections have a new Show mode, Set from source. Pick a language group, a category, or one of your own list filters and the grid lists exactly that set, in your source's glyph order (or by codepoint). Non-exporting glyphs stay out unless you toggle them in. Sets read live from the connected source and update when you save.
    • Fixed: live reload could go quiet after the first save of a source that saves atomically; the file watcher now re-arms itself on every save.
    • Polish: every switch in the section panel now lines up with the other controls.

    • Double-click a glyph in any proof to open it in an Edit view in Glyphs. No modifier needed; Cmd-click still works, with its hover preview.
    • Open documents follow along with agents: MCP tools editing a .fontproof you have open now appear in the app within a second, with a Reload / Keep prompt if you also have unsaved changes.
    • Fixed: live reload no longer restores your scroll one page off after a Glyphs save; clicking a freshly created section reliably scrolls to it once its pages exist.
    • Fixed: welcome-screen thumbnails render with the current version of your font instead of a stale export.
    • Fixed: typing in the waterfall sizes field no longer rewrites your numbers mid-keystroke.

    • Letter spacing is now entered in tracking units: thousandths of an em, so 5 means 5/1000 em, one font unit per gap at 1000 UPM. Arrow keys step 1, shift-arrows step 10, and you can type decimals straight into the field. Grid labels print trk +N. Existing documents are unchanged; their values just display in the new unit.

    • Fixed: a busy Glyphs can no longer freeze Hellbox. If Glyphs was holding its run loop (a plugin window or dialog open), opening or creating any document hung indefinitely. The connection handshake is now bounded and retries on its own once Glyphs is free.
    • Fixed: Save as Template captures the whole document. Header and footer, linked text files (kept as live links), page orientation, custom page colors, layered fonts, and markup all survive the round trip now, and creating a document from a template applies every one of them.
    • Fixed: template thumbnails render with the document's own colors and orientation.
    • The template save sheet's opt-out toggles now fully exclude what they name; "Position" is now "Header & Footer".

    • Placeholders: type HH$HH and the line expands one per glyph. Iterate over lowercase, caps, figures, punctuation, every drawn glyph, or your own list ("ox ffi" works, clusters stay whole). The classic spacing-control workflow without typing 182 lines by hand.
    • Spacing Strings template: one click inserts the seven control frames with the placeholder already on.
    • Insert Template: pour any template's text into the current section from the new content settings popover, which also gathers Save as File, Save as Template, Attach File, Generate, and the Style Tags / Placeholder toggles in one place.
    • Fixed: repeated-flow columns with per-column sizes now paginate until every column finishes; welcome-screen thumbnails refresh after updates and no longer cache degraded renders.
    • MCP: update_section_settings gains expand_placeholders, placeholder, placeholder_set, placeholder_custom, and parse_style_tags.

    • Hinting Preview (experimental). Core Text never executes hint programs, so a font can look perfect in Hellbox and come out different in Acrobat, in print, or on Windows. Tap H over any proof to see it rendered through FreeType with your hints executed (tap again to exit, or hold H to peek). G and J step through dpi presets: screen presets show hinted grayscale rasterization, print presets show the grid-fitted outlines. Find it in the View menu.
    • Hyphenation option per section, in the advanced typography settings. Line breaks use the section's language and render the font's own hyphen.
    • Choose the font and size of page headers and footers in Proof Settings, including page numbers and the date. Any installed font.
    • Printing from Hellbox now prints at actual size instead of scaling down.
    • Flipping a page-size preset to landscape keeps the preset instead of switching to Custom, and page dimensions can display in millimetres or inches.
    • Keyboard zoom snaps to clean increments (103% zooms to 125%, not 128%).
    • Smoother scrolling across section boundaries.

    • Section drag-reorder works from anywhere on a row, every time. Double-click a section to rename it; Return and right-click still work.
    • The content editor is resizable: drag the divider under it. The height persists.
    • Style tags recognize italic style names across languages (Kursiv, Italique, Corsivo, Cursiva, and more), so families like Extraleicht Kursive resolve as italics without manual mapping.
    • Page footer dates follow your system's date format by default, with ISO 8601 and US options in Proof Settings.

    • New <glyphname> style tag: <glyphname>f_f_short</glyphname> inserts the exact named glyph, including unencoded glyphs you can't type: ligature components, contextual alternates, stylistic-set glyphs. The glyph renders directly with no shaping, so calt and other contextual triggers never fire on it.
    • Same markup as drawbot specimen builders that use <glyphname> elements in proofing .txt files, so those files work in Hellbox unchanged.
    • If a font has no glyph by that name, the name renders as literal text. Inside a styled span the glyph follows the resolved style when it has one and falls back to the section's base font when it doesn't. Mix mode protects these spans like any other hand-written tag.

    • Style tags. Wrap any string in your proof text to style it inline: <b> and <i> resolve to the family's real bold and italic, weight roles like <light> and <black> resolve to the nearest weight of whatever family you proof, and any OpenType feature tag works as an element: <smcp>, <frac>, <ss01>. Works in typed content, linked .txt files, and headless CI renders. Fonts without a feature or weight render the span unstyled, so one marked-up file stays portable across a library.
    • Select text and press Cmd+E for a compact tag picker; Cmd+B and Cmd+I wrap directly. Feature-tag chips in the OpenType panel copy their tag on click.
    • Tag styles mapping: choose exactly which font Bold, Italic, and any weight role resolves to, with the automatic pick shown.
    • Mix mode: hand-tagged spans always render as written and the shuffle distributes around them. New Tags only option gives one flowing stream styled purely by your tags, no sliders.
    • Exporting a mixed section to a file writes portable role tags instead of positional indexes wherever possible.
    • Code samples are safe: only registered feature tags parse, so HTML in a specimen renders as text; a per-section toggle turns tag parsing off entirely; backslash escapes a literal tag.
    • Three one-time tips introduce the tag picker, the Cmd+click Glyphs gesture, and Tags only, each dismissable, never at launch (macOS 14+).

    • The menu bar grew up. A new Section menu holds everything section-scoped: Duplicate, Delete, Combine and Uncombine Cells, Save Section as Template. File is now strictly file lifecycle, with icons at the anchors. Font Manager lives in the Window menu, Proof Settings in File, and Focus Mode in View where it belongs.
    • Delete Section finally exists beyond the Delete key: Cmd+Delete, the Section menu, or right-click a section in the sidebar.

    • Cmd+click now opens the exact glyph you clicked, by name. Alternates open as a.ss01, ligatures as the ligature glyph, and unencoded glyphs in a Glyph Set open too. Select a string and hit Return and the drawn glyphs go over, alternates included.
    • Glyph gestures now work in every section type: Compare Styles (all layouts), Glyph Set, Alternates, and vertical text, merged cells and per-cell fonts included.
    • If the source .glyphs file isn't open, Cmd+click reopens it in Glyphs and lands in the right document. The missing-fonts dialog gained an "Open in Glyphs" button too.
    • Drawn glyphs now speaks more than Latin. Arabic, CJK, Cyrillic, Greek, Thai, and more: fonts with no Latin generate proof text from their own script, and fonts with several scripts proof every drawn script, each in its own paragraph.
    • Auto font size fixed for installed system fonts, for feature and case changes, and for generated content in Columns & Rows. Cell labels and the page footer now report the real rendered sizes.
    • Merged cells in RTL and vertical layouts anchor correctly (no more text drawing off the page), and the grid picker mirrors to match the page in those flows.
    • Snappier section switching in the sidebar.

    • The proof and Glyphs are now a round trip. Hold Cmd and the glyph under your cursor lights up; click it and it opens in Glyphs, ready to edit. Select a whole string and hit Return to send that over instead (also in the right-click menu). Fix the outline, save, and the proof has caught up before you switch back.
    • Click anywhere in the proof to clear a text selection.
    • Print. Cmd+P (File > Print) sends the live proof PDF straight to the system print dialog.

Click the wand in the content editor and Hellbox writes running copy using only the letters your font actually has outlines for — each font's page from its own inventory, updating as you draw. Works in Simple text, Waterfall (as a display phrase), and Columns & Rows (whole sections or individual cells).
    • Generated text is seeded and stable: new glyphs extend the text instead of rerolling it. Reroll with the dice, choose Short/Medium/Long, and detach it into editable text whenever you want to take over.
    • Every drawn letter is guaranteed to appear, and with Auto size the text fills the page edge to edge.
    • Grids: a cell size you set explicitly now always wins over Auto, and when cells differ, every cell gets a label so settings are comparable at a glance.
    • Snappier hover states in the inspector.
